Thousands give the Queen a fantastic Scarborough welcome

21st May 2010

The Queen paid a visit to Scarborough to open the newly refurbished £3.5 million open air theatre; it’s the first time the Queen has been to the resort since July 1975. Huge crowds gathered at Scarborough railway station eagerly awaiting her majesties arrival. Huge cheers could be heard echoing across Scarborough town center as the Royal Train pulled into the station at 10am.

The Queen was well dressed for the beautiful Scarborough weather and wore a floral dress and sky blue coat with matching hat. Greeted on the platform by Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, Vice Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Edward York, police superintendent Nicki Watson and Scarborough station manager Edward Monaghan

A former student of Friarage and Raincliffe School, who is now a royal protection officer, said “It was really surreal bringing the Queen to my home town but the whole day went really well. The whole town looked beautiful and it was a very proud moment for me seeing all the people of Scarborough and Cloughton out with their flags lining the paths, and watching my daughter greet the Queen.”

.Mr Dunn’s four year old daughter was lucky enough to greet the Queen after arriving in Scarborough and presenting her with a bouquet of flowers.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen made her way out of the station to her range rover which crawled very slowly past the gathering crowds giving everyone a chance to catch a glimpse. The Queen and her royal party then made her way past thousands of people who lined the route all the way to the open air theatre. They travelled along Westborough, Northway and down Columbus ravine arriving at the newly renovated open air theatre where the Queen viewed a short performance from local theatre groups before unveiling a plaque to mark the reopening of the £3.5 million refurbishment.

After leaving the open air theatre the Royal party paid a visit to the new Hares Leap farm shop before travelling to Cloughton, where they had a pub lunch at the Blacksmith’s Arms, one of the queen’s duchy properties.

It was a fantastic day for Scarborough, the weather was perfect and the crowds came out in force and i am sure the Queen had a visit to remember!
