Milton Rooms to become the Jewel of Malton
06th May 2009
Plans are in place to turn Malton’s Milton rooms into a top art centre. This hub of the historic market town is part of Malton’s ongoing regeneration.
The multi million pound plans to transform the Malton landmark, have estimated costs ranging from £3.8 million to £8.5 million.
Ryedale District Council and consultation experts Creative Industries Development Agency (CIDA) have reveiled four options for the revamp of the Yorkshire attraction. The outline of these plans is to turn the Milton Rooms into an arts, entertainment and community centre.
Over 1,000 local residents were surveyed for their opinions on this scheme and the council says there was “clear support” for the new venture.
As this new venture is part of Malton’s regeneration local residents are now going to be able to have their say. A CIDA presentation in the Milton Rooms will take place on Thursday 21 May between 7pm and 9pm.
Councillor Linda Cowling, who is chairman of the Ryedale District Council’s community services and licensing committee, said:
“Local people have given us a clear message that they would like to see the Milton Rooms become a jewel in the world of the arts in Yorkshire. Support for developing the site have come from all over Ryedale from a variety of people with a range of interests and ages.”
This project has a real community feel to it and the council have urged local residents to air their views so that the development can reach its full potential and be a real asset to Malton.
So far £500,000 of it’s own reserves have been earmarked by the council to pay for the project but it is suggested that it could cost up to £8.5 million to complete.
The aim is to make the Milton Rooms financial sustainable within three to five years and plans to do this include a recording studio, a venue for young people’s activities, host wedding receptions, touring exhibitions and various fairs.
It is hoped that the development of Malton’s Milton Rooms as part of the town’s regeneration will attract higher profile events and performers that guests staying at our Malton hotels and locals alike can enjoy.
