As it’s the May Day Bank holiday its time to get the family out and about and having some fun.

Over the May Bank Holiday various events are taking place for the whole family to enjoy, so if you are a visitor to our Scarborough or Malton hotels then why not go along to some of these excellent events!

SCARBOROUGH CONTINENTAL MARKET

The ever popular continental market is returning to Scarborough town centre and will be offering a wide range of continental treats, including gifts, delicious breads, meats and cheeses.

PADDLEBOARD JOUSTING COMPETITION

Fluid Concept Surf Shop are holding a Paddleboard jousting competition on South Bay in Scarborough (weather permitting). Originally scheduled for Saturday 25th April but postponed due to the weather conditions, the event will now take place on Saturday 2nd May at 11.00am.

To explain the rules of this event you need to paddle stood up on a very large surf board (provided) towards your opponent then, when you are close enough, try to knock them off their board. Sound easy? Well we’ll see!

All profits to go towards planting trees in a local meadow. To register call Steve on 07891094976 or email

EAST COASTING – A DISPLAY OF ART & DESIGN

Between Saturday 4 April and Monday 4 May Scarborough Art Gallery is hosting East Coasting, a display of Art and Design by Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious.

This exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery brings together examples of the remarkable duo’s work, many of which haven’t previously been shown. Many of the pieces also have a special connection to Scarborough.

FLAMBOROUGH OPEN DAY

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has organised a special open day for Bank Holiday Monday at Flamborough Cliffs from 11.00am – 5.00pm.

Why not join the Trust for beach cleans, rock pool rambles, shoresearch surveying, boat trips and bird watching.

During the event there will also be boat trips at 12:30pm, 2:00pm and 3:30pm. These boat trips cost: Adults £5 and Children 2:50. Please wear suitable clothing and trips are weather permitting. Booking at the Trust office (Tel: 01904 659 570) is essential for the boat trips as places are limited.

There will be a host of marine themed activities throughout the day for all the family to take part in and enjoy.

MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS

The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough is going back to 1939 and the week in which Hollywood producer David O. Selznick could make or break his career.

Production has shut down on Gone with the Wind and Selznick is faced with a failing screenplay and millions of dollars disappearing down the drain. He steals director Victor Fleming from The Wizard of Oz and enlists writer Ben Hecht, and together the trio knuckle down for a week of frantic pressure.

Will they save ‘the most expensive film in history’? Or just end up killing each other in a stifling producer’s office?

This play is based on real events and the fast-paced comedy is a small slice of the golden age of Hollywood, bursting at the seams.

The Sunday Times says of Moonlight and Magnolias:

“A seriously hilarious comedy…”

The Daily Telegraph follows suit by describing the comedy as:

“Delightful screwball comedy…that is certainly worth giving a damn about. Terrific stuff!”

Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire is offering you the chance to meet a colourful cast of characters from the medieval period. You will be able to hear tales of horrid tasks and awful jobs, from peasants to our own medieval surgeon! You’re sure to be both gripped and repulsed!
